Peter Schiff Campaign HQ Grand Opening Bursting at the Seams
One word can describe the average Peter Schiff supporter at last night’s campaign HQ. Sardine. The house was packed tight like Times Square on New Years Eve. Parking had overflowed from the office parking lot to the industrial park across the street and adjacent commercial lots around the HQ.It was a well subscribed event. Most notable about the attendees was their party status. Most were not in any way associated with a political party outside of voter registration making this gathering uniquely composed amongst events of it’s type.
Rob Simmons who is the establishment candidate in the race on the Republican side has been traveling the state with a tea bag in his pocket claiming it as his Tea Party credentials. Newsflash Mr. Simmons, a tea bag doesn’t make you a good candidate. Principle does. While Mr. Simmons has a tea bag, Schiff had multiple well known Tea Party folks milling about in the crowd. It appears that although Simmons wants to be the Tea Party candidate Mr. Schiff actually is.
Word is that Schiff is also well on his way to receiving the endorsement of the Independence Caucus, a coalition of various groups formed to vet candidates for office. These are interesting times and it will be interesting to see how many NY-23s pop up across the country in response to establishment GOP candidate choices.
The biggest wild card in this race is still Chris Dodd. Will he stay in? More and more names are coming out opining that Chris ought to retire. It just may happen.

July 4th ReTea Party in Hartford
The Capitol, Hartford, Conn.
12 noon – 3pm
Our grievances with the state of government in Washington, DC go well beyond one administration, a few policies, specific politicians, or a particular political party. The fuel behind our passion derives from the bipartisan destruction of our individual liberties, disrespect for our economic, social, and political well-being, and the shredding of our constitution.
To reclaim our independence and American civic traditions, the following are four key principles and positions that we must demand from our representatives.
PRINCIPLES
Bailouts, Taxes, and Spending Responsibility
There should be no taxpayer bailouts of corporations, and government should never grant private organizations license to commit criminal or fraudulent acts. We must also seek greater transparency of the Federal Reserve System through investigation, evaluation, and audit of its relationships with banking, corporate, and other financial institutions.
Respect the Integrity of the Constitution
We believe that the Constitution was instituted to restrain the arbitrary exercise of government power and to safeguard liberty. A government that routinely disregards the Constitution for the sake of political expediency cannot long remain a defender of the rights of its citizens.
Reducing the National Debt
We believe that there should be no increase in the national debt. The burden of debt placed on the next generation is unjust; it has greatly diminished the power of our dollar and threatens to undo decades of economic progress.
Individual Freedom
We must protect the privacy and civil liberties of all persons under US jurisdiction. We must repeal or radically change the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, and the FISA legislation. We must reject the notion and practice of torture, eliminations of habeas corpus, secret tribunals, and secret prisons.

New features mean more knowledge
I have just heard two bits of bad news from one of our council members.
First, the magic elevator to mayor land has hit a major snag. During the construction process an underground oil tank, which apparently no one knew about, was found. A very expensive and arguably unnecessary elevator for the mayor could be turning the town hall into a Superfund cleanup site before our eyes. UPDATE: I’m told that the tank had been remediated and filled with concrete prior to being lost form knowledge. Thank goodness.
Second, the lone elevator at town hall has been taken offline making the majority of the building handicap inaccessible. This means that town council and other meetings are inaccessible. Let’s hope the elevator comes back online shortly. Update: The Courant reports the elevator is closed through Tuesday.
In other news WordPress has added new functionality, polls. This creates a new opportunity to gauge the political demographic of the readers here. Here are a couple of Pre-November polls for you.

Here is the district list from the East Hartford registrar. Simply download the PDF and search or browse for your street and note the district number to the right of it.
Example:
ELMS VILLAGE DRIVE 5 – 1640
EMELY STREET 4 – 1650

In this example the roads Elms Village Drive and Ensign Street are located in district 5 while Emely Street is in district 4 and Eric Way is in district 2.

Katz loose in the general assembly?
Joshua Katz has announced his intention to run for the 23rd district general assembly seat.
While this news may be a bit irrelevant on a normal day, it interests me because I happen to know Mr. Katz. One October day, while distributing free pumpkins to the community on the New Haven Green, we had the opportunity to exchange political thought at some length. He’d make a great Republican.
Don’t know who Josh Katz is? Refer to this video from the Middletown Straw Poll:

Katz is running as a Libertarian against incumbent Republican Marilyn Giuliano.
From his website:
I am running for the state legislature because of my passionate belief in the principles on which this country was founded – peace, freedom, and liberty. I see all three of these principles as being under attack at present. In Hartford, I will fight to bring Connecticut’s National Guard home for the protection of the state, to eliminate the income tax and let you keep more of your hard-earned money, to protect civil liberties from the ever-growing reach of the government, and for a woman’s right to choose. I am a teacher, and seeing what was happening in the world around me, I resolved that I would not let it be said that I did nothing to protect the world my students would inherit. I will do my part to ensure that they are not saddled with debt, and that they do not come of age in a country with an overpowerful government.Check out his site for more.
